Top 3 ethnographic observations

  1. To use the Metro, you buy individual tokens from a person (usually a lady) in the ticket booth, that you pop into the turnstile to pass. No smartcard system whatsoever. (Not even sure you can pay by card.)
  2. To use the bus, you get on and don’t pay until you get off. And again, no smartcard system – cash only.
  3. Street cleaners drive around on giant hoovers, sucking up all the rubbish. St Petersburg’s incredibly wide streets were so sparkling clean I could lick them.
